I want to start off by saying, Happy Thanksgiving even though it is over with. I have been wanting to write this post ever since the election, however, I decided to take some time and ponder this a little further before writing a rash and angry post.
I am sure some of us (including me) are still trying to accept the outcome of this year's election as the new elected President is Donald Trump. I am an activist for Human, Civil, and Environmental rights and while during Obama's Presidency many battles have been won but there is still so much more to do. I am angry, scared, and nervous about the future under President Trump's administration. I don't want to sit here and preach about my own views and my political stance. I do want to raise awareness of what could happen under President Trumps administration. I feel that there were many who either refused to vote as they believe their vote doesn't count and while this election may have shown that to be it is indeed a false conception. I also believe there were some who voted for Trump because he is overall famous and some voted because they thought it was a joke. Now that he has been elected there is much talk of people fleeing America because they are scared or they want the popular vote to take precedence over the Electoral College votes. While at first, I started to agree that the popular vote should take over the Electoral College I have realized I am in error of this thinking.
The Electoral College was created so that every person is represented in voting and that every state would be even across the board. Since the United States is composed of large and small states the number of people in each state differs which means that larger states when voting may outweigh the smaller states. Also, it had much to do with ensuring that no one branch of the government had more power than the other as direct democracy could corrupt the system. Some ideas to elect president were to either let the State legislatures elect the President or having Congress elect the President. The Electoral College has evolved much like the rest of our government and justice system. You can read the history here. So, to make things be equal to ensure that the States can be properly represented when voting and to ensure democracy from being corrupt the Electoral College was created. You can read more on Why the Elctoral College was created and read more here. The Electoral College comprises of a total of 538 members total and they usually cast there vote in December after the second Wednesday of December in their respective states. While there is much to the process of Electoral College there is a silver lining that the results could change by January 6th.
The future of our nation over the course of the next four years will challenge the checks and balances that have been put in place by our Founding Fathers. Regardless of who is elected in office this election the values that I and many others hold dear will be challenged and what previous Presidents have done will be challenged as well. As it was once said by Margret Thatcher "You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it" rings true even to this day and I feel it will always ring true for the future too. The silver lining again is that things could change and because of me and others who stand united can create change and fight for what we believe in.
The fear I have for the first 100 days that Trump may take if he is truly elected will challenge the rights I stand strongly for as civil, human, and environmental progress could be undone. However, there are some plus sides to him being elected as there is a minicule of things I agree with him on. I guess only time will tell how the future will look but it is garuanteed that I will stand strong and cross my fingers for the best outcome. I was going to go over what his plans were for his first 100 days and how that would affect America should everything pass but like I said I am not going to sit here and preach my values. At least not for the moment, but believe me that I will use every media source to make the future brighter for all humanity.
